INTERNATIONAL CONDEMNATION
Spokesman on
behalf of UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, New York, 26 January 1998
"The Secretary General UN has learnt with outrage of the news of a bomb attack on a major Buddhist shrine in Kandy, Sri Lanka and the resulting loss of life and destruction. As he has done on many occasions, the Secretary General strongly condemns the use of terror tactics in all circumstances. He deplores attempts to divide human beings on religious and ethnic grounds."
UNESCO Director General Federico Mayor, Paris, 27 January 1998
"I am deeply shocked by this act of blind violence perpetrated against a place of meditation, joy and peace. All religions are based on love and respect for life. Attacking a holy place means striking the very best in humanity, undermining its innocence and purity. Those who attack people through their faith can only be condemned. Religious differences can absolutely not be justification for conflict, and places of worship should in no case be used as targets."
HRH Prince Charles, the Prince of Wales, speaking on behalf of the foreign dignitaries who participated in the 50th Independence Anniversary Celebrations in Colombo, 5th February.
" A proud consciousness of this richness of heritage must have made your pain all the more acute when a bomb was exploded at the Temple of the Tooth last month. It was a brutal and malign act, and one which we all join in condemning. The Temple of the Tooth is a part of the world's heritage; it is not just Sri Lankan nor just Buddhist. So all your foreign guests wish you well in the long and painstaking task of restoring the Temple to it's original splendour."
CONDEMNATION BY LOCAL RELIGIOUS LEADERS AND INSTITUTIONS
The most Ven. Rambukwelle Sri Vipassi Mahanayake There of the Malwatte Chapter, 27th January 1998.
" It is with immense pain of mind that I express my shock and profound sorrow on the extensive damage caused by terrorists to the sacred Sri Dalada Maligawa, which is held in deep veneration by the entirely of the Buddhist world."
The Most Ven. Palipane Sri Chandananda Mahanayake Thera of Asgiriya Chapter, 27th January, 1998.
" It is very painful that the attack was launched by the separatist Tamil Tigers on the sacred place honoured and venerated not only by the Buddhists but the entire world community."
Hindu Council of Sri Lanka's President Yogendra Duraiswamy and General Secretary P Paramapathan in a statement, 27th January, 1998.
" The Hindu Council of Sri Lanka has always condemned attacks on places of religious worship. It is thus deeply concerned at the cowardly attack perpetrated on the Dalada Maligawa, the holiest temple of the Buddhists in Sri Lanka. The Hindus and the Buddhists of Sri Lanka have so much in common. The Hindus venerate the Buddha and the Buddhist worship at Hindu temples. We should continue to maintain this good relationship for the general welfare of the people of Sri Lanka."
Archbishop of Colombo, Nicholas Marcus Fernando, 27th January, 1998.
" No one in his normal senses would have thought of perpetrating such a crime which is not only against the Buddhists but against every citizen of this country whatever his religion or race may be."
Rt. Rev. Andrew Kumarage, Bishop of Kurunegala and Rt. Rev. Kenneth Fernando, Bishop of Colombo on behalf of the Church of Ceylon, 28th January, 1998.
" We in the Church of Ceylon are deeply distressed by the dastardly act committed on January 25 causing severe damage to the Dalada Maligawa which is a national shrine. This Temple is held in high regard by all the people in our country and by Buddhists throughout the world."
The Sri Lanka Islamic Centre (SLIC), 26th January, 1998.
" We learn with deep shock and despair of the attack on Sri Dalada Maligawa and hasten to condemn it. It is an act of human indecency. No human being will think of harming a place of worship and reverence to all here and abroad."

What is really happening in Sri Lanka today is that a ‘blood thirsty racist’ group led by some misled Tamils called LTTE is terrorizing against the Govt of Sri Lanka and its people irrespective of their ethnicity with an intention of carving out a separate state. There is no conflict as such between Sinhalese and Tamil communities in Sri Lanka. In fact, the majority of the Tamil community lives in peace and harmony among the Sinhalese population through out the country apart from the Northern part of Sri Lanka. The entire Sinhalese and the Muslims population who lived in the Northern area for centuries were either killed or chased away completely by the LTTE Tamil Tiger terrorists. At the moment, not a single Sinhalese or Muslim is living in Jaffna, but, many thousands of Tamils are living in Colombo. |
