EXTENSIVE DAMAGE The wanton destruction caused to the Temple of the Tooth and the buildings in the sacred and the royal square surroundings, all built centuries ago, would take long to restore to its pristine glory. The detailed extent of the damage includes :
- The Tooth Relic Temple complex ;
- The Octagon, one of the most beautiful examples of Kandyan architecture, whose extraordinary architectonic form dominates the facade of the temple;
- The Mahawahalkada or Grand Entrance (part of the historic facade) containing important sculptures, that took the main impact of the blast, thereby saving the temple complex from much greater damage;
- All the sculptures were badly damaged, some beyond restoration. Completely destroyed in the bombing was one of a pair of elephant reliefs, masterpieces of Kandyan art.

Many other sections of the complex were also damaged including ;
- The Pallemale or "Lower Floor" image house hall ;
- The entrance corridor, which is a painted vault;
- The mural paintings of the main Tooth Relic shrine itself;
- The drumming hall and veneration halls.
- The Vishnu, Natha and Pattini Devales, the temples of the Gods Vishnu and Natha and Goddess Pattini, all venerated by Buddhists and Hindus alike;
- ST. Pauls Church, one of the oldest in the country still in regular worship;
- The Audience Hall of the Kandyan Kings;
- Three Royal Palaces and the Queen's Bath, a lakeside palace;
- Three Museums Archaeological, National and the Museum of the Tooth Relic Temple;
- Library of the Tooth Relic Temple, which houses an invaluable collection of ancient palm leaves manuscripts.
Also, number of other buildings of outstanding historic and architectural value, both within the sacred square and just bordering it were affected by the blast. They include;

Back to Latest News on LTTE Tamil Tiger Terrorists

What is really happening in Sri Lanka today is that a ‘blood thirsty racist’ group led by some misled Tamils called LTTE is terrorizing against the Govt of Sri Lanka and its people irrespective of their ethnicity with an intention of carving out a separate state. There is no conflict as such between Sinhalese and Tamil communities in Sri Lanka. In fact, the majority of the Tamil community lives in peace and harmony among the Sinhalese population through out the country apart from the Northern part of Sri Lanka. The entire Sinhalese and the Muslims population who lived in the Northern area for centuries were either killed or chased away completely by the LTTE Tamil Tiger terrorists. At the moment, not a single Sinhalese or Muslim is living in Jaffna, but, many thousands of Tamils are living in Colombo. |
