THE BLAST The blast caused extensive damage to most areas of the Sri Dalada Maligawa. However, the Sacred Tooth Relic which is housed in the inner chamber miraculously escaped any damage.
Also the extensively damaged by the blast were the Vishnu, Natha and Pattini Devales (Shrines) and St. Paul's Church all of which are located in the 'Sacred and Royal Square', adjacent to the Sri Dalada Maligawa complex.
Despite this act of provocation on those belonging to all religions in Sri Lanka who venerate this site, the Sri Lankan people have once again refused to be provoked. The incident has also underlined a salient feature Sri Lanka has shown throughout its recent struggle against LTTE terrorism - the patience and resilience of its people in the face of adversity.
This is probably the first time in contemporary world history that a sacred shrine of such international religious significance and a site of world heritage has been deliberately targeted by a terrorist group in the world in an attempt to bring about its destruction.

What is really happening in Sri Lanka today is that a ‘blood thirsty racist’ group led by some misled Tamils called LTTE is terrorizing against the Govt of Sri Lanka and its people irrespective of their ethnicity with an intention of carving out a separate state. There is no conflict as such between Sinhalese and Tamil communities in Sri Lanka. In fact, the majority of the Tamil community lives in peace and harmony among the Sinhalese population through out the country apart from the Northern part of Sri Lanka. The entire Sinhalese and the Muslims population who lived in the Northern area for centuries were either killed or chased away completely by the LTTE Tamil Tiger terrorists. At the moment, not a single Sinhalese or Muslim is living in Jaffna, but, many thousands of Tamils are living in Colombo. |
