Every terrorist organisation in the world declares that they are fighting for a "just cause". Such a ploy is quintessential for two reasons: to brainwash susceptible people and convert them into human bombs who are able to mount cold-blooded attacks on innocents and to enable foreign countries to allow terrorist agents to operate freely on their soil. Key words "Minority rights", "Liberation", "Oppression", "Discrimination", "The Right of Self Determination" and "Human Rights" are invariably misused by terrorist propagandists for their benefit. They tactfully infiltrate or influence human rights organisations in need of members, good samaritan religious groups, politicians hungry for a few votes and media thirsty for controversy. Soon, these entities become unwitting supporters of their perceived underdogs while the terrorists continue to violate the most precious of all human rights - the right to live.
SRI LANKA IN TEARS
People of Sri Lanka (an island smaller than Tasmania with a population larger than that of Australia) feel the pain of the American people better than anyone else. For two decades Sri Lankans have suffered untold atrocities committed by the LTTE who have killed an estimated 50,000 civilians to date. The objective of the terrorists is to carve out a mono-racial "Tamil homeland" named "Eelam" from this densely populated tiny island of Sri Lanka. This is in spite of the fact that only 2.5 million (13% of Sri Lanka's population) is Tamil whereas Tamil Nadu of India is home to 60 million Tamils. If it becomes a reality, the north and the east of Sri Lanka – more than one third of the land area and two third of the coastline of the island - would be inhabited only by Tamils under the steel boot of Prabhakaran. All other ethnic groups and 65% of the Sri Lankan Tamils who have already fled the north and the east in fear of the LTTE will be confined to the remainder.
In their efforts to create this artificial "Homeland", the terrorists have so far ethnically cleansed the island’s entire north and most of the east. To date, 73 rural villages have been raided. No non-Tamil is spared. Children and pregnant women are prime targets for their macabre crimes committed with scythes and machetes. This campaign of gruesome terror has caused an estimated 800,000 non -Tamils to flee their ancestral villages in the north and the east of Sri Lanka and become "refugees" in their own country.
Truck bombs activated in city centres, high power explosives planted in airliners, merchant ships, trains and buses have killed thousands of people and maimed many thousands more. Just three months ago, they attacked the only international airport on the island, in a foiled attempt to use an airliner as a flying bomb. With no help from any power, the small democratic nation that is Sri Lanka, a Commonwealth country, has been allowed to plunge into utter economic ruin through the attacks of these abominable terrorists.
LTTE - the self-proclaimed "liberators of Tamils" - mercilessly deal with any Tamil dissenters. More than 300 Tamil leaders - rival militants as well as MPs, Mayors and other democratically elected Tamil representatives - have been assassinated on mere disagreement. Over 20,000 innocent Tamil children, some as young as ten, forcibly grabbed from their parents, have been "martyred" having been spent as cannon fodder in the LTTE "child brigades". The UN special envoy on Children, Olara Otunu and Amnesty International have repeatedly castigated the LTTE for sacrificing children in their war.
Tamil Tiger terrorism is international. They provide mercenaries to others abroad. Former Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi was blasted to pieces by an LTTE suicide bomber for his efforts at mediation in the crisis. An LTTE bomb killed many civilians and severely damaged an international airport in South India. Canada had to appoint a special Tamil Task Force to curb the violence in the streets of Canada. Bangladesh authorities foiled a Tamil Tiger contract to assassinate their PM. Killings and violence by LTTE have occurred in UK, France and Switzerland. Muslim rebels in the Philippines are aided by LTTE agents at the request of Bin Laden’s Al Qaeda. US lead forces may get rid of Osama, but Bin Laden II – Prabhakaran - will soon fill the void. Out of 310 suicide bombs the world has seen, 230 were carried out by the LTTE!
US Defence Secretary Collin Powell said: "We are building up a strong coalition not only to go after Wednesday's attackers but also more broadly to go after terrorism wherever it is found in the world. It's a scourge not only against the United States but against civilisation and it must be brought to an end'
British Prime Minister Tony Blair said: "…destruction of the machinery of terrorism wherever it is found….. There is no compromise with such people…The consequences of our inaction will be far far greater."
In spite of these noble proclamations, Sri Lanka is compelled to negotiate with these terrorists who used the cease-fires during "negotiations" in 1985, 1989 and 1994 only to regroup, rearm and attack without warning. Sri Lanka is not the only developing country fallen victim to this philosophy. The World must take heed: Terrorism is like smallpox; Terrorism anywhere is terrorism everywhere. No cause can justify terrorism. The period between "passive" and "active" terrorism can be surprisingly too short.
In Australia, like elsewhere, terrorists operate in the guise of charities and community organizations - raising funds through drug trafficking, people smuggling, rorting the welfare system and through our donations. They have infiltrated media, human rights organisations and religious groups. What is worse, some politicians have become unwitting mouthpieces of terrorist agents. When the incubation period is over what happened in the US, Canada and UK will happen on our streets. Mere political lip service will not stamp out terrorism in Australia. It can only be achieved with punitive legislative infrastructure and unceasing vigilance over terrorist front organizations.
WE URGE ALL OUR POLITICAL LEADERS TO COMMIT TO ENACTING EFFECTIVE ANTI-TERRORIST LEGISLATION AND APPOINTING A ROYAL COMMISSION WITH THE WIDEST TERMS OF REFERENCE CHARGED WITH INVESTIGATING TERRORIST FRONT ORGANISATIONS IN AUSTRALIA AIDING AND ABETTING TERRORISM ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD.
