Presidential Elections: Sri Lanka Expatriates Organisations Support the forces upholding the Unitary Status of Sri Lanka
The
World Alliance for Peace in Sri Lanka (WAPS) is a Confederation of
Organisations around the world that has come together to support the defence
of Sri Lanka from separatist terrorism.
Our
member associations from Canada to Japan, from the United States to Australia,
and in different countries in Europe have campaigned over the years against
the disinformation campaign carried out on Sri Lanka by the LTTE separatists
and parties with vested interests. We have lobbied various Parliaments and
other organisations in Japan, Australia, the US, Canada, United Kingdom and
other countries in Western Europe. Often this has been done when the Sri Lanka
government itself was unaware of the machinations being taken against Sri
Lanka. Sometimes the Sri Lankan government itself was part of the LTTE
strategy to dismember Sri Lanka. Our members individually and collectively
have on a voluntary basis worked hard on behalf of Sri Lanka's interest.
We
have watched in frustration how Sri Lanka’s politically motivated decisions
have prevented the armed forces carrying out their job of defending the
country's Unity, sovereignty and Territorial integrity of its borders.
We
have watched with dismay how a secret understanding between the UNF GOVERNMENT
and the LTTE led to a situation where formally, parts of Sri Lanka were given
to the control of the LTTE. We have also watched with astonishment as the
President, Chandrika Kumaratunga on several occasions distorted Sri Lankan
history and facts and acted virtually as a propagandist for the LTTE. We, who
live in countries having self-respect where leaders take their prime duty of
defending the country's borders seriously, have watched with amazement and
utter dismay at these antics of Sri Lankan leaders as they bent over backwards
to indirectly help dismember the country.
The
coming presidential election is a crucial one. For the first time in nearly 15
years, there is a clear demarcation between the forces who want to defend Sri
Lanka militarily, ideologically, and economically, and those who are acting as
agents of foreign vested interests that seek to exploit the national
resources. There is also much distortion and disinformation being thrown to
cloud the issues. At the present presidential election, we note with amusement
that those individuals and parties who contributed most to the erosion of Sri
Lankan sovereignty now pretend, in their propaganda, to be the most patriotic.
Mr Ranil Wickremasinghe has to this date not blamed the LTTE for its numerous
dastardly acts including the murder of Lakshman Kadiragamar.
Our
member associations around the world have examined the two manifestos and
programmes of the two leading candidates. We see between the two, a clear
demarcation regarding several vital issues affecting Sri Lanka. These include
the country’s self-respect, territorial integrity, commitment to a unitary
state, rejection of the invented claims of traditional homelands, and respect
for human rights and democracy. In the minds of the constituent expatriates'
organisations of Sri Lankans living abroad there is absolutely no doubt that
the forces committed to defend the interests of Sri Lanka and her people
should be supported.
We
from outside the country have seen Sri Lanka being belittled and eroded during
the last 15 years. We have shed many a frustrated tear, as have millions of
our friends and relatives in Sri Lanka. We believe that the end to the erosion
of sovereignty can begin with electing the correct person.
We
understand that large amounts of resources including money and coercion
including credible death threats are being marshalled from the LTTE and its
allied groups. We humbly and respectfully ask our countrymen not to be bowed,
but to vote for a definite turning point in Sri Lanka's history. We believe
that by supporting and voting for the correct candidate will result in Sri
Lanka becoming once again a land with self-respect and dignity. We urge our
countrymen to support by their votes, by telling the truth and marshalling all
resources available. Please remember that the entire resources of the LTTE and
its allied groups have been brought together to continue the LTTE's hold over
THE Sri Lankan state.
You however can make a difference. Defeat the LTTE and their supporters who are ready to barter the rights of the Nation for votes and foreign funds.
Yours truly,
World Alliance for Peace in Sri Lanka
