Sole Representatives of the Tamils in Sri Lanka – over the Corpses of Tamil Patriots

SPUR, NSW condemns unequivocally the brutal killing of Mr Maha Kanapathipillai of the Eelam Peoples Democratic Party (EPDP) today in Colombo, and extends its heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Mr Maha Kanapathipillai. Mr Maha Kanapathipillai was the coordinating secretary to the  Minister and Tamil leader Mr Dougals Devananda in the Sri Lankan Government.  

The Tamil Tigers are systematically eliminating all opposition and democratic dissent within the Tamil community in Sri Lanka. The EPDP states that nearly 40 supporters of their democratic political party have been eliminated by the Tamil Tigers since the ceasefire agreement in 2002. The picture with other democratic Tamils in Sri Lanka is no better. The Tamil United Liberation Front leader Mr V. Anandasangaree, the leader of the largest Tamil democratic political party was kept hostage by the Tamil Tigers during the last elections, preventing him even casting his own vote. Mr Anandasangaree is under constant death threat from the Tamil Tigers, as are thousands of other Tamil activists in Sri Lanka

The unabated killing spree of innocent civilians by the Tamil Tigers during the ceasefire agreement has now reached dangerous proportions for the very survival of the Sri Lankan nation. On one hand, the Tamil Tiger terrorists are yearning to run their own exclusive ethnic patch of a Tamil homeland in the north and the east of Sri Lanka, and have entered a ceasefire agreement with the Sri Lankan government. On the other hand, they remain the brutal, dehumanised and maniacal terrorists ever willing to decimate the very Tamil people they profess to protect. They continue to abduct and conscript underage Tamil children to their armed cadres, and the protests by world bodies such as UNICEF, Amnesty International., Human Rights Watch and the Red Cross goes unheeded. In effect, the Tamil Tiger terrorists have become the doom of the Tamil people in Sri Lanka.  

The Tamil Tigers also wants the world community to recognise them as the sole representatives of the Tamil people in Sri Lanka. The international community now has the dubious privilege to recognise the Tamil Tigers as the sole representatives of the Tamil people in Sri Lanka – over the Corpses of Tamil patriots.

The state of the nation and the functioning of its democracy is finally the responsibility of the leaderss of the nation.  Patriotic sons and daughters of the nation are being gunned down, or brutalised at will by the Tamil Tiger terrorists at each and every corner of Sri Lanka. Those at the helm of the government and those who have been at the helm of the nation, must take responsibility for their actions and inactions, lethargy and cowardice for the loss of these valuable human lives.        

Leadership to the nation needs to be given from the front, and  SPUR, NSW urges the Nation’s leaders to take their responsibilities seriously and to prevent the loss of any more innocent lives and the destruction of the Nation.
