The
Government of

The Society for Peace Unity and Human Rights for Sri Lanka (SPUR), an 11-year-old human rights organisation operating from Melbourne, Australia condemn the Tamil Tiger Terrorist's despicable attack on innocent civilians. The LTTE has killed close to 30 and injured more than 80 civilaians in bus bombs and suicide missions carried out over the weekend at Nittambuwa and Seenigama in Southern Sri Lanka respectively. The audacity of the Tiger terrorists is breathtaking as so called one of its leaders Seevatahnam Puleedevan, issued a statement on 4 January 2007 that the Sinhalese in Sri Lanka would have to face "serious consequences" if the air force continues to carryout attacks against Tiger bases in north of Mannar in the northern Province. The tiger terrorist's words have been transformed to deeds as clearly demonstrated by the tragic attacks on the civilian busses just 2 to 3 days after Puleedevan's despicable utterances. The duplicity of the Tiger Terrorists has been once again exposed as Puleedevan is the head of the so called Tiger Terrorist's Peace Secretariat, an organisation frequently visited by the Norwegian peace facilitators, the SLMM and members of INGOs local and international. Unless the Government and the international community take decisive action to isolate the LTTE terrorists, they will continue to undermine democracy in Sri Lanka and driving the 99% of the people who yearn for peace spiralling in to an environment of despair.
Whist the Government has been quick to condemn and take actions to minimise such dastardly acts in the future, the so called members of the Peace Brigade such as the National Peace Council, the Centre for Policy Alternative and the LTTE's friends in media such as Sunanda Deshapriya have gone missing. We also wonder what Lalith Kothalawala has to say as he is alleged to have called the LTTE 'freedom fighters' in an interview given in the Middle East. There is no doubt that these unpatriotic organisations, individuals and even politicians from the rabid Left would use this opportunity to pressure the Government to give in to the terrorist and to embrace the 'suicide bombers' rather than take decisive actions to stop LTTE's terror including condemning the LTTE publicly. We are also eagerly awaiting the views of the SLMM and even international organisations such as the UN and UNICEF. It would not surprise SPUR if these organisations default to parroting empty word such as "both parties should desist from violence and work towards protecting human rights" without naming and condemning LTTE's acts of terror.
SPUR has also noted with contempt the planned action of the United People's Movement, a collection of well known anti-patriotic, opportunistic individuals, bankrupt politicians and jail-birds planning a rally at Nugegoda next week to campaign against emergency law and call for a Federal structure rather than support the President in his endeavours to eradicate terror. SPUR would also not be surprised if individuals 'rented' by the LTTE would come out and justify LTTE's terror claiming the bus bombings to be payback for the Government's actions against the LTTE naval base at Iluppaikadawali, North of Mannar.
The Government of Sri Lanka must take decisive actions to provide security and safeguard its people from terror and consider:
" Reintroducing the banning of the LTTE in Sri Lanka. This should not be a barrier for further peace initiatives as the British Government continued to have a dialogue with the IRA although it was banned as terrorist organisation in UK. Such a ban would severely limit the freedom the LTTE enjoys currently in Sri Lanka. A similar approach has been adopted by the Spanish government in its dealings with the Bask separatists, ETA " Stopping LTTT's interactions with the international community including foreign government officials, agencies such as the World Bank, INGO's and Sri Lankan NGO's. Exceptions should be limited to the Norwegian peace facilitators and members of the SLMM " Jamming all its clandestine broadcastings from LTTE controlled areas " Dispatching an eminent persons team consisting of the Prime Minister, Mr Karu Jayasuriya, Ms Fereal Ashroff, Mr Anandasangaree and a member each from the JVP and the JHU supported by a distinguished diplomat such as Gen. Janaka Perera to visit key nations around the world, including India, the EU, Norway, UK, USA and Japan to rectify misinformation and provide firsthand reports of LTTE terror initiatives " Instructing some of the dozing Ambassadors and High Commissioners to awaken from their slumber, counteract LTTE misinformation and actively pursue the banning of the Tamil Tiger Terrorists in their domicile countries
SPUR urges the international community including countries such as India, and organisations such as the UN and the EU to issue decisive warnings to the LTTE that they are under the microscope, their conduct is despicable, their human rights violations are considered as Crimes against Humanity and their links with international terrorists are tracked with alarm. There is no value in the international community and agencies such as the UN continue parroting empty world such as "both parties, the Government and the LTTE should avoid violence and begin respecting the ceasefire", an instrument favouring the LTTE that has only existed on paper right from the start.
The credibility of the International community is at stake and SPUR is watching their conduct with interest. The Government of Sri Lanka is committed to protecting one of the oldest democracies in the world whilst the LTTE terrorists are hell bent on destroying it.
The international community and India especially must take decisive actions against the LTTE and help the Government of Sri Lanka to eradicate the scourge of terrorism from its land.
