Media Release : Thursday, 27 April 2006

Mr. Jose Manuel Durao Barroso

President of European Union Commission

1049, Brussels

Belgium.

Dear Mr. President,

BAN TAMIL TIGER TERRORISTS (LTTE) IN EU COUNTRIES IMMEDIATELY

We refer to our letter dated 15 Aril 2006 and bring to your notice the subsequent perpetration of brutal terror by the LTTE against the democratically elected Government of Sri Lanka and its people, including unarmed civilians.

A LTTE woman suicide bomber attacked the Sri Lanka Army headquarters critically injuring the Army Commander General Sarath Fonseka, killing 8 and injuring 27 others. It was only on 23rd April that the brutal LTTE killed 6 Sinhala farmers who were toiling in their paddy fields. Yesterday they stabbed and killed a young Sinhalese mother who was breast-feeding her child in Serunuwara in Trincomalee. The LTTE is executing a plan to ethnically cleanse Sinhalese and Muslim communities from the East of Sri Lanka. Their strategy is to maximise the killing of Sinhalese and Muslim people, driving them away from their villages abutting terrorist controlled areas. The complementary objective is to provoke civilian riots elsewhere to justify the LTTE’s racist claim that Tamil communities cannot coexist with the Sinhalese and the Muslim people.

In addition to the above, since December 5, LTTE has killed 64 Army personnel, 36 Navy men, 4 Airmen, 10 Police officers, 7 Home guards and over 100 hundred unarmed innocent civilians. How would each of your member countries react if a terrorist group premeditate and commits such brutal crimes in their countries?

We know that as usual, you would condemn these brutal killings of the LTTE, sympathising with the grieving families of the victims. Predictably, despite committing such heinous crimes including the conscription of child soldiers, you will impress on the Government of Sri Lanka to negotiate with these brutal terrorists seeking an amicable solution to this terrorist problem. Will any of your countries negotiate with a terrorist group displaying such pathological lust for blood?

Sympathy alone for the Sri Lankan Government is grossly inadequate. What Sri Lanka needs at this moment in time are tangible EU actions to discourage the LTTE from killing human beings.  Proscribing the LTTE and naming it as a terrorist organisation could achieve this most effectively. Such a ban in EU countries will deter LTTE’s dubious fund raising activities weakening its capacity to purchase arms and perpetrate terror.

The President of the EU has been previously informed of the atrocities committed by LTTE over the last twenty years, including the killing of statesmen, politicians, their political opponents, clergy and thousands of innocent civilians. Details of LTTE atrocities can be accessed via our website: http://www.spur.asn.au/latest1.htm or http://www.spur.asn.au.

We urge you to extend full military support to Sri Lanka to protect democracy, and proscribe the LTTE and name them as a terrorist organization in EU countries immediately to:

·         Stop the ethnic cleansing of the Sinhalese and Muslim people from the east of Sri Lanka; and

·         Convince the LTTE that human rights are sacrosanct and that their brutal conduct is unacceptable to the civilised national and international community.

Thanking you,

Dr Dasarath Jayasuriya

President
