Why are attacks on Sinhalese civilians in Sri Lanka Ignored by UNICEF and other International Organisations?

The increasingly desperate Tamil Tiger terrorists under instruction from its lunatic leader Prabakaran have embarked on an ethnic cleansing binge focused on killing as many Sinhalese civilians as possible including innocent children. The number of children killed by the LTTE out of the 100 or so civilian deaths in the last two weeks stands at 25%. Prabakaran erroneously believes that killing innocent children would precipitate mass hysteria and possibly, irrational behaviour by kith and kin of the dead. His pervert motives could be distilled by closely scrutinising the recent statements made by the LTTE and their cohorts in the West. The  LTTE’s expectations were that the relatives of the diseased children would pressure the President to stop advancing on Prabakaran’s  El Alamo in the Vanni  take the law in to their own hands seeking first revenge and then justice. All these have failed miserably with many of the parents publicly calling the President to eliminate Prabakaran and annihilate the terrorists so that other parents would never be subjects to the depth of sorrow experienced by them.

The deafening silence of international organisations entruste d to safeguard the interest of children such as UNICEF is indeed puzzling and disappointing. UNICEF was quick off the block with press releases and media statements when Sencholaii was bombed by the Sri Lankan air force. There was subsequently irrefutable proof that Sencholaii was indeed a transit camp of the LTTE where they illegally provided combat training for children as young as 12 years. Why is UNICEF so arrogantly silent when there is mass killing of Sri Lankan children by the Tamil Tiger terrorists? Is it because a majority of these children are Sinhalese?  Where is the cacophony of protest from the NGO mafia in Sri Lanka fuelled by foreign dollars and LTTE‘s favours? Are the so called Human Rights advocates such as the National Peace Council, the Centre for Policy Alternative, the Free Media Movement deaf as well as dumb? We are struggling to locate a single media release from any of these agents categorically condemning the LTTE for the violence they have unleashed against the civilians, especially Sri Lanka ’s innocent children.

Before SPUR is hounded from pillar to post by UNICEF and other benevolent self centred NGOs, SPUR wishes to state that it visited a number of websites of the said agents and found the contents quite bemusing and even in some case, amusing. UNICEF undoubtedly takes the cake.

UNCIEF boasts about the “Convention on the Rights of the Children” reaching 18 years on 20 November 2007 and urges visitors to send e_cards and celebrate the milestone. A beautiful cake adorns the card with 18 lit candles topping it. SPUR would like to remind the world at large that the Convention had 54 articles and that article 6, especially referred to “the Survival, the Development and the Protection” of children. Alas, the seven children from the DS Senanayaka Maha Vidyalaya (high school) assassinated by the LTTE did not survive, have no opportunity to develop and their protection and right to life was extinguished by brutal terrorists. Bluntly stated, they are all very dead. There would be no bright candles on their birthday cakes this year unlike on the 2008 cake celebrating the 19^th year of the Convention on the Rights of the Children in far flung corners of the world.

UNICEF and other NGO’s operating in Sri Lanka must walk the talk. The last press release of UNICEF dated 14 November 2007 states, we quote “We firmly believe that UNICEF and its staff will continue to enjoy the confidence of the Government and a majority of people in Sri Lanka ”. Sad to say, their recent conduct leaves a lot to be desired. To regain confidence and show impartiality, we urge the so called NGOs championing human rights and especially UNICEF to clearly:

1.       Condemn LTTE’s ethnic cleansing practices, especially their targeted attacks against children

2.       Remind the LTTE leadership of  what happened to Charles Taylor from Liberia at the International Criminal Court in the Hague , and that fate awaits the LTTE leadership

3.       Refrain from parroting commentary that would blame the Government for unsubstantiated issues.

No one denies that the LTTE was responsible for killing mass of children in Sri Lanka in the last month. We have included pictorial evidence to jog the spasmodic memory of UNICEF and NGOs such as the National Peace Council and the Centre for Policy Alternative in case they have forgotten this fact.

Massacre of school children by the LTTE Tamil Tiger terrorists at Okkampitiya, Monaragala in Sri Lanka on 16 January 2008.

LTTE Tamil Tiger terrorists have carried out a cowardly bomb blast targeting innocent civilians at Okkampitiya, Monaragala on 16 January 2008. According to the available information the bus which was plying from Buttala to Okkampitiya with large number of civilians including schoolchildren has been targeted in the explosion (Details and photos in SPUR).
