For the purposes of analogy .........................the Dalada Maligawa in Kandy in Sri Lanka is to Buddhists, what St. Peters in the Vatican is to Catholics or the Ka'aba in Makkah is to Muslims.
The Sri Dalada Maligawa in Kandy, Sri Lanka, the temple which houses the Sacred Tooth Relic of the Lord Buddha, is possibly the most sacred Buddhist shrine in the world. It is venerated not only by Buddhists in Sri Lanka but also by Buddhists all over the world.
A UNESCO designated World Heritage Centre, millions of pilgrims and Buddhists and non-Buddhist visitors from all countries of the world visit this historic centre in Kandy, Sri Lanka.
The sacred Tooth Relic was brought to Sri Lanka from India during the reign of King Sirimeghavanna (303 - 331 AC) and has been protected by successive kings and the Buddhist monastic order through the centuries. The archaeological remains of earlier Tooth Relic temples exist at a number of earlier capitals, such as the World Heritage Sites of Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa. The shrine in Kandy is the last in a long, historic succession. The Tooth Relic Temple is one of the finest examples of architecture associated with the Second Kandyan Kingdom (1592-1815 AC). It is two-storeyed structure, last re-built in the early 18th Century by King Narendrasinghe (1707-1739 AC). The temple preserves an architectural form that goes back more than a thousand years. It is constructed of stone, and timber, with a tiled roof and elaborate paintings, wood and stone carvings and metal reliefs.
There is one mention of the Temple of the Tooth Relic being repaired by Mahinda IV in the Anuradhapura period, when it was burnt by Chola invaders.
The much framed annual Kandy Esala Perahara held mid-year, when the sacred Tooth Relic of the Lord Buddha is taken in a colourful procession for public veneration, has become a key event in the international tourist calender, drawing huge crowds to the city of Kandy.
THE BOMB At 6:10 am on 25th January 1998, suicide carders of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) exploded a massive truck bomb at the entrance to the Sri Dalada Maligawa killing 8 persons including 2-year old infant and injuring about 25 others, all peaceful innocent civilians, who were on their way to offer alms at the temple that morning.

held in London - 20 Jan
2001 On 20th January 2001, a group of Sinhala expats living in London held a Buddha Pooja Pinkama at London Buddhist Vihara in order to remember our brave soldiers who met their death in the battle field by trying to save our country from the invading Tamils, and also the innocent victims including Bhikkus, pilgrims, and beggars during the massacre at Sri Maha Bhodhi, Ven Aranthalawe Thero and the victims of the attack on Dalada Maligawa etc. etc. The merits thus generated by this pinkama was offered to the demised and Ven. Dr. M. Vagiragnana of London Buddhist Vihara who conducted the activities of the ceremony wished the wounded victims of all the Tamil terrorist deeds, relief and solace by the aid of the Holy Triple Gem. This is the third year this pinkama was held since the attack on Sri Dalada Maaligawa. |

ceremony to mark LTTE attack on Dalada Maligawa A religious ceremony to mark the day the LTTE mounted a bomb attack in the Sri Dalada Maligawa, Kandy was held on January 25 at 2.30 p.m.in 2000 at the 'well Bodhiya" adjoining the Maligawa, Executive Secretary, Sinhala Veerra Vidhana, Major General Annda Weerasekera said in a news release. The address of elcome will be made by a representative of the Sinhala Veera Vidhana Religious sermons will be delivered by the. Anunayake thero of the Malwatte Chapter and a ven . monk of the Asgiriya Chapter. They will be followed by speeches by prof. Mendis Rohanadheera and prof. Oliver Abeynayake the news release stated. Fifty Samanera bhikkus will be awarded seholarships on the occasion. Diyawadana Nilame Neranjan Wijayarathne will propose the vote of thanks. |

What is really happening in Sri Lanka today is that a ‘blood thirsty racist’ group led by some misled Tamils called LTTE is terrorizing against the Govt of Sri Lanka and its people irrespective of their ethnicity with an intention of carving out a separate state. There is no conflict as such between Sinhalese and Tamil communities in Sri Lanka. In fact, the majority of the Tamil community lives in peace and harmony among the Sinhalese population through out the country apart from the Northern part of Sri Lanka. The entire Sinhalese and the Muslims population who lived in the Northern area for centuries were either killed or chased away completely by the LTTE Tamil Tiger terrorists. At the moment, not a single Sinhalese or Muslim is living in Jaffna, but, many thousands of Tamils are living in Colombo. |
