Eric A. B. Fernando A.C.M.A, A.T.F.A., Kandy, Sri-Lanka, 26 August 2003 : It is absolutely incorrect to say that only Tamils are subjected to checks at security barriers. For instance, during the time of Kandy Perahera practically all were subjected to strict checks and the discomfort was mostly felt by the Sinhalese Buddhist devotees. It would be almost impossible to erase from our minds the mass destruction caused on the Dalada Maligawa and the irony is that it is almost always the most innocent that suffer most. While it is not right to say that every Tamil is a terrorist, there appears to be greater justification for the tamils to be subjected to stiff screening than the Singhalese. The probability of a Tamil being a Terrorist is much more than in the case of a Singhalese. Quite unfortunately, the only guide for decision making is the past experience. I appreciate that extrapolation of past trends as a basis of predicting the future is unfair but any law abiding citizen will concede that checking at barriers is nothing new and such needs have been the outcome of actions by LTTE and any Tamil having a justifiable grievance must direct their accusations towards LTTE rather than accuse of being discriminated by GOSL. Finally, there is no tangible evidence to suggest that LTTE is genuinely regretting over their past conduct. It is the concerted view of most that they are just marking time and their next attack is not that far away.
